Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, you have a friend in Canada.

HuffingtonPost.ca reports:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper launched into a full-throated attack on the evils of communism at a fundraiser on Friday for a monument to its victims.

In a lengthy key-note speech to the dinner, Harper took aim at Russian President Vladimir Putin and past adherents to communism.

“During the 20th century, communism’s poisonous ideology and ruthless practices slowly bled into countries around the world, on almost every continent,” Harper said.

“The result was catastrophic. More than 100 million souls were lost — an almost incomprehensible number.” …

In language reminiscent of the height of the Cold War, Harper lambasted communism and oppressive or even murderous ideologies.

“Evil comes in many forms and seems to reinvent itself time and again,” he said.

“But whatever it calls itself — Nazism, Marxist-Leninism, today, terrorism — they all have one thing in common: the destruction, the end of human liberty.”

Canadians, the prime minister said, are well aware of that destruction.

“We feel this pain so acutely because nearly one quarter of all Canadians were either held captive by communism’s chains or are the sons and daughters of those who were.”

Can you imagine Barack Obama making such a declaratory statement about such an evil ideology?

Joe Biden Urges Air Force Graduates to Usher in a ‘New World Order’

Saturday, May 31st, 2014 by Kyle Olson

Joe Biden
(rollingstone.com)

Stripes.com reports:

Under a blazing sun, Vice President Joe Biden challenged graduating Air Force Academy cadets on Wednesday to help create a “new world order for the 21st century.”

Biden called on images from the end of World War II, part of a White House push to burnish a foreign policy that has been challenged by Russian aggression and continued trouble from North Africa to Afghanistan.

“I believe we and mainly you have an incredible opportunity to lead in shaping a new world order for the 21st century in a way consistent with American interests and common interests,” Biden said before shaking hands with 995 members of the class of 2014.

The reference to a “new world order” echoed a similar goal set by President George Bush after the collapse of European communism.

The so-called collapse of European communism was indeed a fundamental shift. But what’s different now? America is really the only superpower in the world – the only place we have to go is down. Is that what the vice president is suggesting?

Stripes.com reports Biden’s definition is: “a world that seeks human rights, free trade and an end to poverty and oppression.”

Aren’t we doing that now?

COMING SOON UNDER OBAMACARE: 115 Day Waiting Period to See Doctor

Saturday, May 31st, 2014 by Jim Hoft

American veterans at the Phoenix veterans hospital were forced to wait an average 115 days for their first medical appointment. These waiting times are reportedly systemic throughout the VA.

If this is how the government treats its military men and women, how do you think the government will treat ordinary Americans?

The joys of government-run health care – waiting for 3 months to see a doctor when you’re sick.
The AP reported:

Veterans at the Phoenix veterans hospital waited on average 115 days for their first medical appointment, which is 91 days longer than the hospital reported, the Department of Veteran Affairs’ internal watchdog said Wednesday.

The news brought immediate calls for the resignation of Veterans Secretary Eric Shinseki from Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Miller also said Attorney General Eric Holder should conduct a criminal investigation into the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Richard J. Griffin, the department’s acting inspector general, reported that investigators had “substantiated serious conditions” at the Phoenix VA hospital, including 1,700 veterans awaiting care who were not on an official waiting list.

“We have substantiated that significant delays in access to care negatively impacted the quality of care at this medical facility,” Griffin wrote.

Miller said the report confirmed that “wait time schemes and data manipulation are systemic throughout VA and are putting veterans at risk in Phoenix and across the country.”

OOPS! House Democrat Admits Obama Had Enough Funding to Treat Veterans – But Didn’t

Saturday, May 31st, 2014 by Kyle Olson

Brown
(mediaite.com)

The Democrats’ only hope to pin the outrageous VA scandal on Republicans is to somehow portray them as obstructionists who cut the VA budget to save money.

Florida Congresswoman Corrine Brown apparently didn’t get that memo.

As Mediaite puts it:

Rep. Corinne Brown (D-FL) probably did not set out to substantiate virtually every Republican talking point regarding how Democrats and the Obama administration have handled, or mishandled, the scandal surrounding the Department of Veterans Affairs. Nevertheless, that was the result of her spirited attempt to defend President Barack Obama Wednesday at a House Veterans Affairs Committee Hearing.

Invoking images of the central Florida congresswoman hovering high above her district in an SR-71 Blackbird, Rep. Brown assured the hearing’s attendees that she has performed her “reconnaissance” on the VA. Following the successful completion of that mission, Brown reported to her colleagues that the Veterans Affairs facilities in Florida were “doing fine.”…

In less than two minutes, Brown confirmed two key Republican themes. First, that this administration has failed to deliver on its campaign promises; that the president and his party are detached, aloof, and deluded; that they cannot address this abominable scandal because they largely refuse to acknowledge it exists. And second, that a lack of funding for the federal government’s Leviathan social bureaucracies is not the reason why they disappoint so often and so completely. Those bureaucratic monsters fail because their unwieldy design and the scope of their mission preclude the possibility of success.

Brown’s tut-tutting proves a lack of resources was not the VA’s problem. In fact, it was reported last week that the VA expects to have more money than it can spend this year for the fifth year in a row.

Montel Williams SHREDS VA Scandal: We Must ‘Pay Our Debt’ to Forgotten Veterans

Friday, May 30th, 2014 by Kyle Olson

Military veteran and television personality Montel Williams appeared on The Glenn Beck Program Thursday to state his case for fixing the broken VA medical system and “pay our debt” to veterans.

Williams’ appearance came on the heels of an emotional speech he gave on Memorial Day in South Carolina.

GlennBeck.com reports:

“If you saw me in the speech – I don’t think people understand why I feel this way,” Williams told Glenn while holding back tears. “I visit our guys at Walter Reed, Bethesda. I cook for our guys around the country. I cook for their family members, for the people who serve them.

“I’m walking the walk my friend. And right now I am so offended and disgusted by what we are doing as a nation to the guys who let us live this democracy we have.”

New Orleans’ Last Five Government-Run Public Schools Close in Face of Charter Competition

Friday, May 30th, 2014 by Ben Velderman

If you build it, they will come.”

That famous quote may be from a movie about a fictional baseball field, but it also accurately describes the real-life school choice drama that’s occurring in The Big Easy.

The Washington Post reports that charter schools – independently operated public schools – have proven so popular with New Orleans parents that they’ve driven traditional, government-operated public schools out of business.

During the just-completed school year, an estimated nine of 10 New Orleans students attended a charter.

As a result, New Orleans’ last five government-run schools closed their doors for good this week. The city will be the first in the nation to have a school district comprised entirely of charter schools.

The Post writes:

“An all-charter district signals the dismantling of the central school bureaucracy and a shift of power to dozens of independent school operators, who will assume all the corresponding functions: the authority to hire and fire teachers and administrators, maintain buildings, run buses and provide services to special-needs students.”

New Orleans officials turned to charter school operators to help recreate their broken school system in the aftermath of 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Before the storm, the city’s public schools were widely viewed as the worst in the nation – not only because of poor academic results for students, but also because of widespread corruption and incompetence among school leaders.

Bottom Line: Michelle Obama Is Not An Elected Official – So Why Does She Get to Push Her School Lunch Policies on Congress?

Friday, May 30th, 2014 by Victor Skinner

(Cnsnews.com)

First Lady Michelle Obama wants public schools to quit complaining about her new “healthier” lunch standards, and to stick to the program that has left students starving and schools losing money since it was implemented in 2010.

Mrs. Obama made her views known as the House Appropriations Committee considered a plan this week to allow schools to opt out of the federal lunch standards if they’ve lost money for six months.

School lunch directors from across the country have complained in recent years about drastic drops in revenue tied to the standards that force students to take food they don’t want, and tend to throw away. Some districts have even dumped the federal lunch program altogether, opting to go it alone without federal assistance.

Student revolts – including a viral YouTube video – also erupted in several districts as students have dumped their lunches into overflowing garbage cans, rather than choke down the unappetizing food.

Leaders of Eight Left-Wing States Come Up with Scheme to Increase Electric Car Purchases

Friday, May 30th, 2014 by Ben Velderman

green car
(Polaris.com)

Progressive leaders in eight “dark blue” states who are unhappy with the tiny number of “zero emission vehicles” on the road are joining together on a plan to correct the “problem.”

The Wall Street Journal reports that officials in California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont – states that collectively represent 28 percent of the auto market – will use the old carrot-and-stick routine to increase sales of zero emission vehicles to 3.3 million by 2025.

Zero emission vehicles include those that run on electricity or hydrogen-powered fuel cells, as well as plug-in hybrids, the LATimes.com reports.

Currently, there are 200,000 such vehicles on U.S. roads. Analysts note that demand for zero emission vehicles has been slipping in recent years.

The “carrots” being offered by the states are primarily for consumers: rebates for “green” car purchases, access to car pool lanes, and lower road and bridge tolls. The states will also petition the federal government to continue offering income tax credits for environmentally friendly cars.

While those incentives may appear underwhelming, the “sticks” will be more substantial.

Car dealers will be pressured into promoting “green” cars more aggressively, and businesses will be encouraged to install recharging stations for employees.

More states may even follow California’s lead and set sales quotas for “green” cars on any auto manufacturer that wants access to its markets. This strong-arm tactic has led auto manufacturers to produce zero emission vehicles that few people want, just to be able to sell their other, more popular cars.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, for example, “takes a $14,000 hit on every sale of the electric version of its Fiat 500,” LATimes.com reports.

It’s just common sense to conclude that Fiat Chrysler and the other auto companies are increasing the price of their other cars to recoup some of that lost revenue.

So while the greenies’ obsession with the electric car may seem cute and harmless, it’s actually leading to higher prices, lower profits, and (likely) fewer jobs.

But the environmentalists are okay with Americans being nickeled-and-dimed to death by their policies. After all, the Left’s overall goal is to create a more just and equitable world, because Americans eat too much, drive too much, consume too much and pollute too much.

As conservative talk show host Mark Levin likes to remind his audience, green is the new red.

Brits Begin Including Prostitution, lllegal Drugs in Measuring Overall Economic Activity

Friday, May 30th, 2014 by Ben Velderman

sexwork
(Reuters)

New economic reports indicate the U.S. economy actually shrank by 1 percent in the first three months of 2014, instead of growing by .1 percent as originally believed.

It marks the first time the U.S. economy has contracted in three years, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Those are bad numbers for President Obama and the Democrats – especially in an election year – which is why they’ll want to pay close attention to the new way officials in the United Kingdom are “growing” their economy.

According to CNN Money, “The British government is now including prostitution and narcotics sales in its official Gross Domestic Product (GDP) statistic. That’s the oft-cited measure of how much a country’s economy grows or contracts.”

Government officials estimate the shadowy activities add $16.7 billion a year to the overall economy, and say they’re including illegal drugs and prostitution in GDP figures because other European Union nations do, too.

Montana Vets Claim They’re Experiencing Longer Wait Times for VA Care

Friday, May 30th, 2014 by Kyle Olson

KECI
(KECI screengrab)

As the depth of the VA scandal continues to emerge, news station KECI reports Montana vets are experiencing longer wait times to obtain an appointment.

KECI reports:

Accredited claims agent Matthew Getz said he has seen a gradual increase in the periods of time veterans have to wait for non-emergency medical appointments.

He said a month or two ago, the normal wait time would be 30 days.

“That’s begun shifting to the 60 day time frame,” said Getz. “In the past week I’ve had a half dozen clients who have shown me their appointment schedule letters for appointments being scheduled up to 90 days out.”
