Bernie Sanders Says White People Don’t Know What It’s Like to be Poor (VIDEO)

Bernie Sanders White People

At last night’s Democrat debate on CNN, Bernie Sanders claimed that white people don’t know what it’s like to be poor. That’s not only racist, it’s stupid and untrue.

The Hill reports:

Sanders’s comment on white people and poverty creates social media stir

Bernie Sanders stumbled on a question at Sunday’s debate over whether white Americans can empathize with blacks, stating that white people don’t know what it’s like to be poor.

“When you are white, you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto, you don’t know what it’s like to be poor, you don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you are walking down a street or dragged out of a car,” Sanders said when asked about his personal racial blind spots. “We must be firm in making it clear that we will end institutional racism and reform a broken criminal justice system.”

Sanders is an idiot.

It’s amazing that he has so much support.

  • I cannot count all the times a liberal has told me there were more whites on welfare than blacks. Apparently, Bernie didn’t get the memo!

there are more whites than blacks on welfare in this country. the difference is that the blacks are genuinely poverty stricken whereas a good percentage of the whites are just lazy asshats with a sense of entitlement who believe they deserve to be semi-supported by the federal government

      • And the basis for your own assumption, that whites are in poverty, but blacks are in “poverty poverty”* is what exactly? I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a more racist way to describe the situation, that blacks, unlike other people who can be governed by greed or avarice or a sense of entitlement only seek out government assistance when they are in abject poverty, unlike a “good percentage” of whites who are just “lazy asshats”. I personally believe that goodness or lazy asshattedness is not dependent on race, color or creed.

Does this mean that the discovery of so much as a single black who is a “lazy asshat” disproves your theory? I say theory, because I doubt there is any legitimate study on the planet that agrees with your conclusions.

Would I be correct in assuming that you, too are a liberal? Or does the Bernie face in your avatar mean you have shifted much, much farther to the left?

BTW, since Bernie Sanders spent most of his adult life on public assistance, before suckling on the government teat of politics, is he your exemplar of a white “lazy asshat”?
        Just wondering.

*like “rape rape” (Thank you Whoopi Goldberg)

        • Sharon LaCouture

Actually, lazy ass hats [IMHO] are the white chicks with one or two kids [and one or two ‘baby daddy] who get subsidized housing, free medical, food stamps, WIC, etc. who have a scumbag drug dealing boyfriend living in their [nearly] free housing. They drive a better car than I do, get their hair and nails done regularly, have gold chains/earrings/bracelets/rings, tattoos/body piercings [which aren’t inexpensive]
Having worked with underprivileged, poor [and yes] poverty stricken families of all colors my opinion is fact-based not an assumption.
And I did not say or imply that there are no poverty stricken white people/families nor did I say that ALL families of color are poverty stricken.
Try not to read so much into my comment. Was it my avatar that set you off? Yup. I support Bernie Sanders. What is your point?
BTW, holding elective office (as Sanders has done for most of the last 35 years as a mayor, a U.S. Representative, and a U.S. senator) is as much a “9 to 5” job as any other. And collecting unemployment benefits is not public assistance. So, to answer your question, No. He is not my exemplar of a white ‘lazy asshat’.

          • A Sanders True Believer! Great! In all his years in Congress, what would you say is his signature piece of legislation? What has he accomplished in all his years on the other side of the government dole? (other than cashing the checks and keeping his chair warm?)

          • LDM

I am dealing with the very same issue with another “Sanders True Believer”
All they can say is that “Trump is interchangeable with Hitler”. Mud slinging is not an answer to my question. So as much as I hate to say it, don’t hold your breath waiting for a legit answer.
Interesting that they cannot come up with One Single Thing of actuality that Mr. Sanders has as his “signature piece of legislation”
Tsk Tsk………..me thinks we are dealing with a wee bit of ignorance or more mesmerized ‘media robots’ – Ha!

          • Most of my questions to liberals are rhetorical. The majority are either too dishonest or befuddled to give an honest answer. I try to couch the discussion in terms that will be clear to open minded people on both sides.

          • BTW, your characterization of “white people” on public benefits is what we in the business call “anecdotal”. Substitute the word “black” for “white” and I have heard those anecdotes, too. Almost word for word. Even if every word you said was true in your experience, that does not make it universal.
I will be bold and say again, Asshats come in all colors.

      • J.E.Walker

Thank you for explaining that! LOL!!!!!!!

  • tommy mc donnell

when I was growing up in the projects there were plenty of white people living there. when he says he wants to end institutional racism does he mean he wants to end affirmative action, the only institutional racism we still have in the united states.

Bernie know how to be poor, he got his first paycheck at age 40. I guess potential employers saw him for what he was worth, and calculated his wages accordingly – nothing.

What an IDIOT guess that means White people don;t get food stamps or welfare????

    • iWildwood

Wow. This makes my heart hurt. The one in the middle could well be me, and how it was that I grew up in the throes of abject poverty.

  • FlamingLimousineLiberal

White people will surely know what it’s like to be poor more concretely if Comrade Sanders is elected.

On January 20, 2017 he’ll order all bank accounts and assets frozen with garnishments attached to all future income.

    FREE STUFF FOR ALL!

    • iWildwood

Don’t you mean: FREE STUFF FOR ALL – unless you’re white.

      • FlamingLimousineLiberal

my apologies. I meant free stuff for all…liberals/progressives/socialists/communist voters.

  • nodhimmi

F up you commie loving geezer! I wanted to study abroad in college could not afford it my parents took a loan out so I could even go to college ! This from a dude who lived on the dole until he was forty years old! A friend in work, a white man, loves this doofus. If only he knew!

  • Olde Pharte

Screw you, Bernie Sanders! I’m white, red-headed, freckled and have a degree and I “live” in a (predominantly black) ghetto, and those crack/meth-dealing pimps live way better than any whites who live here. If they hadn’t torn down the PJs just so us poor white trash would know, w/o doubt, what it’s like to “live” in a ghetto, I’d just know what it’s like to be “white, financially challenged”. I now own long and short firearms and have made the acquaintance of several police officers. So it hasn’t been all bad. Felt good to stand up for myself and an ever-shrinking # of whites when I’ve had to. I visited South Africa in 2011 and saw the fate of the majority of post-decolonialization whites. I’m sure glad I don’t have kids!

Funniest part is, the people from that part of the country tend to look at Vermonters the way Southerners look @ Mississippians: poor, uneducated white trash!

  • Buster000

This guy must be smoking crack

  • Juan Motime

Is he another black/white guy???? Shish Now us whites need to start po white lives matter!!!!!

  • iWildwood

Bernie Sanders needs to spend a few weeks hanging out with me. He’d quickly come to realize that in this rather large and diverse city I live in, most of the homeless are WHITE!

  • Kendra Lausman

I have been poor, been without heat, without a home, even rode 6 buses a day to get to work, school and home. I have gone to bed without anything to eat and cried myself to sleep hungry, because I was too proud to ask for handouts (government or otherwise). So I dare anyone to say that I did not live and understand what poverty was. I dare anyone to look me in the eyes and tell me that the color of anyone’s skin means that they do not understand what it is like to be poor.

Not in the south, not here in Alabama where the number of whites living below the poverty line is higher than the number of blacks living below the poverty line. Hungry, cold, homeless and/or poor, none of these things require you to be any specific race, gender, religion or any sexual orientation in order to belong to that sad, miserable, needy group. Because being poor is poor and no one gives a rats ass about the color of skin of the person that is poor, all they see is the lack of; the lack of money, lack of material goods, lack of options and worst of all, the lack of power. Being poor means someone is always making decisions, rules, laws and policies that affect the quality of your life, but you have little to no input into those things. Being poor is not a time or a place that anyone ever wants to be caught in, but many more have been there than our own government wants anyone to know. It is time we all face the fact that this is not only a Black lives matter issue, or a Latino one, not just a gay, or a straight one, or a white one, it is an ALL LIVES MATTER ISSUE.

Until we, as a country, no longer have homeless veterans living on the fringes of society, existing only in the shadows, sleeping in the streets. Until we no longer have babies and children starving to death, hidden behind closed door, forgotten almost as soon as their deaths are announced. Until we finally agreed to treat mental illness and drug abuse as the tragedies that are and begin really trying to make affordable treatment options available for everyone, including the working class poor in this country. Until we do these things we will never be anything but a haven for the rich to make their fortunes off the backs of those very same working class poor. Until our middle class stops believing the lies that they are spoon-fed and stop hiding in their little spilt levels, securely fenced-in and soundproofed, hiding themselves away in their hear-no-evil, see-no-evil communities. Until that same middle class stands up to those lies, pulls the robes off the liars and thefts ruling, ruining and corrupting our country. Until they refuse to carry the full burden on their backs and make the money makers, the movers and shakers pay their fair share, minus the multitude of loopholes and tax scams, until then, we will always be a divided country. A country divided by class, money and each ones own realities. I want to live in a country united by our differences not divided by them.

Hey Bernie, I grew up in a 1-bedroom apartment with three kids and a mom. We had bunk beds, a trundle bed and a sofa bed. We didn’t have a car until I was 19 and it was more than 5 years old. We lived on Cambells pork & beans and oatmeal for a long time. That was before food stamps. So don’t tell me “white” people don’t know about poverty.

  • jimmyv65

Sure we do Bernie, except unlike you we did not rely on government jobs and programs for our support. We worked harder and overcame the obstacles to EARN our success

  • Sharon LaCouture

lovely collection of haters here. You all make me ashamed to be an American

  • J.E.Walker

Poor old Bernie the Commie is losing it.
